Happy Thursday December 17th!

Reminders:

No school Friday (PD Day/Start of winter break)

Mr Weins has shared our winter concert! Watch room 5 here: Winter Concert

School will be online after the winter break from Jan 4-8. I will be sending out an easy to follow schedule with times to follow for the week. I will also resend everyones log in information.

Happy happy happy last day of school before winter break!

Today in room 5!

As you know, today was pajama day! It was nice to be able to wear our comfy clothes and do some fun activities before saying goodbye for a few weeks.

We began our day with opening the presents I bought for each student! Everyone was ecstatic to receive there present bags with their name and a few things inside. Students also received cards from their grade 6 buddies that were hand made!

Room 5 went off to gym with Mr Sadowsky before coming back to class for a quick morning meeting and snack.

After recess on the compound we moved into some math time. Today the students did some holiday math with combining tens and ones written in expanded form. 20+3=23. Then had to color the hats either red or green depending on whether they were greater or less then 50! The bonus activity was an addition color by number of a math elf.

After lunch we finished working on our snowmen at night art using pastels the effects of smudging, light and dark and chalk pastels. This kind of activity takes patience but is easily fixed by re-smudging the chalk pastels.

The final products will be sent home in the new year!

We finished off our day by watching The Grinch! We talked about how the Grinch learns about generosity from his experience with the Whos. Generosity was our pillar of the month so it fit perfectly into the end of our day!

I hope everyone has a wonderful break! Keep safe, eat lots, and enjoy time with loved ones.

See you all in the new year!

Mr Lancee🎉

Wednesday Dec. 16, 2020

 Happy Wednesday December 16!

Reminders:

Tomorrow is pajama day! Apologies for the late notice! Feel free to wear your favourite jammies tomorrow but please leave your stuffies at home.

No school Friday (PD Day/Start of winter break)

Mr Weins has shared our winter concert! Watch room 5 here: Winter Concert

Today in room 5:

After our catch up time and calendar we moved into some writing time. For writing today I had the grade two's doing printing and sentences with the letter L. We read a story about the letter L, practiced L words, printed L and l letters, and finally created a sentence using an L word and our word wall words.

We then had snack while watching a tumblebook and recess on the playground.

Upon returning inside we continued working on our Charlottes Web comic book. I am pushing students to add detail to their pictures so I know exactly where the important parts of the first half of the book are taking place!

After lunch we had a short block before gym. Our larvae finally hatched from their pupae stage into meal worms! We drew the meal worms, wrote about the characteristics we saw and we each got to hold a mealworm. Students were thrilled at how fast they could crawl all over their hands!

Below is a picture of the meal worms stages:

We finished up our afternoon with some mathletics time on the ipads before heading home!
Make sure you are taking some time to complete some of the assignments on your own :)

Have a great evening everyone!

Monday December 14, 2020

Happy Monday December 14!

Reminders:

No School Friday (PD day and start of winter break)

Today in room 5:

We began our day with some time to read, finish holiday cards, and finish our letter Z printing from Friday.

After phys. ed with Mr Sadowsky and morning calendar, we continued to read a chapter from Charlottes Web while eating snack.

During our writing block today I had the students create a letter to a fictional student who is moving to the prairies. It was our job to tell the student about all the great things they would see when moving to Saskatoon, job the parents could have, and finally something interesting about Saskatoon. We will be finishing these up this week.

In the afternoon we had some time in math to begin exploring double digit addition with ones and tens blocks. We practiced building the number into 10's and ones and then adding another number (in tens and ones) to it. This greatly helps students to understand what the numbers mean as they add them together!

We finished our day by completing a survey that will inform me of the students reading interests, if they like reading, if they like being read to, prefer online or in person books and finally how they feel when reading.

Hope everyone has a wonderful evening!

December 9, 2020

 Happy December 9, 2020!

Reminders:

-Beddington Heights is participating in the Mayor's Annual Food Drive this year!  Please bring in any nonperishable food items for the Calgary Food Bank!  Also, we are collecting monetary donations. This will be a great act of kindness and show a great deal of care for others during a trying time of year for those who are less fortunate.  The drive ends Dec 11th.  Thank you for your support on this!

-Winter Break starts December 18th! Less than 2 weeks!

-The first week back from school we will be doing online learning (Jan 4-11) I have given parents their log ins in a private email earlier in October. We have practiced logging in now three times! They may need some additional help at home when the time comes.

-Safety reminders: We want to keep our friends, family and classmates safe this year...

What can I do to keep myself safe?

§ You can practice healthy habits at home, school, and play to help protect against the spread of COVID-19. At school we need to continue to do the following:

§ Wear a mask in classrooms, hallways and shared spaces.

§ Keep your hands out of your mouth, nose, and eyes- This will help keep germs out of your body.

§ Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

§ Follow these five steps— wet, lather (make bubbles), scrub (rub together), rinse

and dry. You can sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice.

§ If you don’t have soap and water, use hand sanitizer. All classrooms now have hand sanitizer for you to use.

§ Monitor your health each day before you come to school. If you feel sick, stay home. Just like you don’t want to get other people’s germs in your body, other people don’t want to get your germs either.

Highlights from the day!

In Language arts today I introduced the students to some word work games that we will use with literacy centers from now! There are quite a few to choose from and the students were very excited to try them today!

Some of these games include: Wood words, pop words, magnet letters, I spy words, and sight word bingo to name a few.

In the afternoon I gave students some time to work on Razkids reading their leveled books. I have been trying something knew in which I let students choose their book to read from the digital books on the ipads. It is great to learn the interests of the readers and mix up the resources we use to read.

Today we also started a Charlottes Web comic! We discussed as a class six important events that took place in the first half of the book. We used these to build six sections of a comic page! Today we focused on the first two sections and will continue this throughout this week and next.

We finished off our day practicing some single and double digit addition using number lines and hundreds charts. I will be giving a basic facts test tomorrow to see how much we have grown!

Have a great day everyone!

Mr Lancee

Today in room 5:

Today was a big day for room 5! We broke our down into several small parts and accomplished quite a bit!

I gave the students their usual 30 mins to start the morning to catch up on creature typing. During this time students also read or finished their word work from Thursday.

We then went through our morning calendar and added the days of the week, number of the day, and weather graphs. As a class we did a math talk and looked at how to represent different numbers. I gave each student their own number and asked them to represent it as many ways as they could. Students could draw pictures, use tens grids, tallies, number lines, and tens and ones blocks to represent a number.

After our calendar we took some time to have a sharing circle. In this sharing circle we reviewed the rules of only allowing one person to talk, sharing feelings, showing respect for others answers, and building a sense of community. Today we practiced this with the question...What did you do on your weekend? Students did a wonderful job waiting their turn to speak, listening to others, and sharing what they did on the weekend and how it made them feel.

When we finished recess on the playground we moved into some printing and letter sound practice. Today's letter was Ss. We talked about the sound it makes, how to print it upper case and lower case, and where the sound can be found within other words. Students used books to support their findings of words that contain Ss.

After lunch we moved into some word work time. Below is the list of this weeks wow words!

are

did

must

now

but

please

Our task today was to write them in pencil, rainbow and your favourite color. Once they finished they were tasked with finding the words in books to see how they are used!

After gym playing some jumping jack dodgeball we transitioned into math. Today's math lesson reviewed being able to write numbers four different ways. The ways we practiced were:

Number

Place Value (Tens and Ones)

Expanded form

and pictures (using tens and ones blocks)

The table the was missing different ways to write the numbers and it was up to students to fill in the blanks. Below is the sheet we completed today.

It was a great to review these concepts and it keep it fresh in their brains :)

We finished off our day watching the rest of Inside Out. After the theme we discussed how we were feeling with everything happening in the world. We also compared how the feelings in Inside Out are similar to how we feel during the zones of regulation. Students compared how the Zones shows us calming strategies and ways to move back to being happy and ready to learn. It is great to see students using these strategies daily in room 5 :)

Have a great evening everyone!

Stay safe.

Mr Lancee

-The first week back from school we will be doing online learning (Jan 4-11) I have given parents their log ins in a private email earlier in October. We have practiced logging in now three times! They may need some additional help at home when the time comes.

Today in room 5:

We began our day with some time to finish some Minecraft inspired Zones of Regulation characters. Students who were finished had time to work on their word work or read.

Some students were asking for blank characters to use at home so here they are!

After our morning calendar the students had music with Mr Wiens!

We moved into snack and recess on the playground before starting some LA. In LA we continued to type our creature journals on our ipads. I showed everyone how to use the ipads editing tools to correct misspelled words and grammar. We are almost completely finished!

After lunch we had some time to work on the letter N for printing and letter sounds. We did not have quite enough time to finish everything...so we will continue working on this Monday!

In gym the students had choice of three activities: Scooters, hoola hoops, and scoops and balls.

It was great to see the choose have some choice in the activities they wanted to play!

We finished off our day by watching most of Inside Out. We are watching this movie as a class to see how the emotions in the movie connect to our zones of regulation! We will finish the movie and Monday and fill in a venn diagram to compare the movie and what we learned this week.

Have a great long weekend everyone!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with some time to read our brand new library books! Ms P. hand selected us some great stories to read and use for the next few weeks.

Students then enjoyed some time after reading in the gym with Mr Sadowsky doing some holiday themed team games.

Next we moved into our morning routine to look at our December calendar, days of the week, months of the year, number of the day and a brand new weather graph! We are  filling in the weather of Calgary for the month of December using a bar graph. On the back side we built the x and Y axis of a new line graph! This new graph will help us to compare the temperature in Saskatoon and Calgary. It will also help us to see the pattern of how the temperature rises and falls depending on the day!

After snack and recess on the field we moved into some word work. For word work today we moved watched a rhyming book (Hop on Pop) to see how the beginning sounds of words change when we rhyme. I then had students use our wow words (all, be, came, do, eat, good) to create new words using rhyming!

In the afternoon we had a large chunk of time using ipads. For this block I had the students log into their educbe emails on google docs. Students are now more familiar with being able to log in which well help them when we go to work online! After we logged in, students were tasked with typing up their edited work journal write up from their create your own creature project. Typing is a very important skill that I wanted students to begin practicing early :)

After recess on the playground we began working on our second zones of regulation poster. This poster will be displayed in the hallway for all students to use. We used blank Minecraft characters to show the different emotions we feel in the four zones. Students also decorated labels which will go underneath the emotions.

At the end of the day we had a fire drill and the students did a fantastic job with leaving the school quickly, quietly and remaining quiet once they were lined up outside. Keep up the great work room 5!

Have a great evening!

Mr Lancee
