Happy Thursday Jan 28, 2021

Reminders:

No school tomorrow!

Reading...Give it a Shot

BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program.  Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day.  Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?

When your child reads 30 minutes they will earn one reading card. I have sent home a green folder with the sheet to track your minutes! Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! The reading competition started Monday, January 18th and ends March 26th. Teachers will be tracking totals in order to hopefully win a virtual visit from the Calgary Flames. The more they read… the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school virtually!

Thank you for your support and work with encouraging your child to read!

Go Flames Go!

A note from Mr Sadowsky,

On Monday we will begin jump rope for heart which will run for the entire month of February. Students will be doing skipping and hula hooping in phys ed when they are with their classroom teacher to promote this. (They will be doing lacrosse when with Mr. Sadowsky) If they choose to fundraise this year, all donations will be made online. Due to COVID we can't accept cash or cheques. A parent letter will be coming home today or Monday which explains how they register online so they can collect donations through their account. We will collect donations from Feb 1st to Feb 28th. All prizes for collecting donations this year will be gift cards due to COVID and a list of prizes can be found on the website when they register. Anyone who raises a minimum of $20.00 will also be added to a draw for a bonus prize through our school. We have about 13 prizes to give away which include soccer balls, basketballs, skipping ropes and 1 mini hockey set which includes a mini net, 2 mini sticks and a mini ball.

Thank you in advance for all of your support to help a great cause. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Sadowsky. grsadowsky@cbe.ab.ca

Today in room 5:

After some catch up, free write and read to self time the students headed off to gym with Mr Sadowsky.

When we finished up gym and snack I had the students create their monthly picture prompt writing.

This was today's picture prompt:

We brainstormed words that related to what we could see or possibly hear, touch and feel. Students came up with ideas on how they could come up with a story for the picture. Some of the ideas included robots going on an adventure, coming to life, breaking down, hiding from garbage trucks and much more.

Students then began writing and drawing a story or observations based off the picture.

After an indoor recess we had time on the ipads completing mathletics assignments! Try and finish some assignments at home if you can :) Email me if you need your child's log in.

After literacy centers in the afternoon we moved into an art project.
The art today focused on creating the northern lights over a snowy field or hill.
Below was the inspiration for our art!
http://kathy-angelnik.blogspot.com/2015/01/northern-lights-winter-landscape-art.html

We used black paper, chalk pastels, oil pastels and lots of patience to complete the art project today.

We finished our day by cleaning up and saying our goodbyes!

Have a great long weekend everyone!
Stay safe and warm :)

Today in room 5:

We began our day with a short catch up, read to self, and free write time. This gave me some time to work with my my reading groups on specific skills.

After our morning meeting we had a quick snack before working on our next printing letter. We covered the letter I today! We talk about the different sound it can make and words that have an I or i. Next, students had to write a sentence using their wow words and a letter I word.

After recess on the playground we moved into some math. Yesterday we applied our knowledge of place value, addition and blocks towards solving double digit addition questions. We broke down how to regroup our ones into the tens when adding numbers together. If you would like some extra practice there is some questions below!

In the afternoon we moved right into literacy centers!

Below is an example of how centers are organized.

Students are grouped together based off their reading and writing needs in shapes.

We finished our day off by starting our mural for Iqaluit.
Today we examined the town and buildings that will be added to our mural alongside other topics we explore throughout the unit.

Hope everyone has a wonderful evening!

I took down everyones minutes today! But I forgot to hand out cards!! I will give them all tomorrow.

This week in room 5:

Language Arts:

-Literacy centers have begun!

-Our centers are read to self, read to someone, word work, teacher table, word work games         and working on writing! Today I introduced everyone to their groupings. Some students             did read to self, others did word work while I worked with students at the teacher table.

-Wow Words

    This weeks words are:

            -under

            -going

            -into

            -our

            -think

- Monster writing good copies! We will be taking our rough copies and rewriting them as finished and edited work to display on the wall in the class.

- January writing sample (based off a picture, Thursday!)

Math

-Today we played some number sense and addition games as a fun way to start off the week.

-We will be continuing our practice with double digit addition for the next two days. Tomorrow I will show the students another strategy that may help some who are struggling with regrouping!

Science

-Today we explored the rules around the north and south poles of magnets. We used a pencil and ring magnets to test and practice the interaction of North- North, south- south, and north - south poles.

Based off the picture....
The bottom magnets are all facing north-South North-south north-south so they are attracted to each other (opposites attract!!)
The top magnet is south north so the poles repel!

-We will also be testing how to make your own magnet at school tomorrow.

Social
-Investigating the differences in food prices in a prairie community, compared to an arctic community.

-Creating our Iqaluit mural (whole class project)

-Creating Iqaluit style houses and buildings for the mural.

    -Creating Aurora Borealis art

Phys ed.
-Last week of racket sports & fitness/games with Mr sadowsky

I want to start off by saying the students of room 5 are coming home looking probably very tired today! We had a suuuuuuuuper busy week and we learned so much! Catch up on sleep grade 2's and enjoy some relax time. You earned it :)

Today in room 5:

We began our day with some time to either free write or read to self. I have been tracking the minutes read in class and minutes read at home and we have read for...1814 minutes!

Way to go room 5!

After our morning calendar and snack we continued working on our monster writing. Now that we are almost all finished we will create our good copies next week! They will then be hung on the wall inside the room with their monster art.

We then had gym indoors, as it was too chilly to go outside! For gym we did a warm up on gonoodle, followed by some guided dancing. We finished up with a game of hot potato before sitting down for math.

In Math today we had mathletics. I went through some of the tools to help students solve questions while working on Ipads. This gave me time to be able to circulate and help students find strategies for solving their work!

Looking for some extra work or practice? Log into mathletics :)

Razkids is another fantastic option for catching up on reading at home!

We finished our day with a sharing circle and talked about our week. We all agreed that we are feeling green (happy) and blue (tired) after a long, but great week!

Have a great weekend everyone!
