Happy Friday March 26th!

Reminders:

Spring break starts today!

Today in room 5:

Today the students had their first pillars of care virtual assembly. We used Microsoft Teams to showcase everyones class and how they showed the pillar of care for patience. We then had the winners come up and say their names and what pillar they won.

After the assembly and some gonoodles we had snack before starting our Friday art lesson. Today we learned about Ukrainian easter eggs, otherwise known as Pysanky eggs! This connected perfectly to our people of the prairies unit and the holiday at the end of spring break.

Students divided the paper eggs into sections and then filled them with colors, lines, shapes and symbols special to them.

After we finished the eggs we went outside to the compound for gym using our recess balls.

We finished off our day with a mega room and desk clean before packing up and heading home.

When we come back from the break I would like to start up a reading at home sheet again. Similar to the reading give it a shot but slightly different. This will help motivate students to continue reading at home and be able to track their minutes read.

Hope everyone has a wonderful spring break! We will see you when we come back on April 6th!

Stay safe, eat well, be kind, be caring, have fun and get outside :)

See you all when you come back!

Reading...Give it a Shot

BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program.  Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day.  Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?

When your child reads 30 minutes they will earn one reading card. I have sent home a green folder with the sheet to track your minutes! Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! To earn these new cards students must read for 60 minutes. The reading competition started Monday, January 18th and ends March 26th. Teachers will be tracking totals in order to hopefully win a virtual visit from the Calgary Flames. The more they read… the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school virtually!

Thank you for your support and work with encouraging your child to read!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with a chance to read to self and finish working on our "Tuurngait" story from the previous day. We did some fill in the blanks related to looking at the story as a folktale and noticing comparisons to Iqaluit.

The video can be found here: Tuurngait

After our morning meeting and snack we worked on our monthly writing sample!

The picture we used today was:

We had been learning about characters all week and students worked to come up with a story or what they saw in the picture. Some have to finish tomorrow morning!

After recess on the playground we came inside to do math centers.
Today's math centers were:  Mathletics, subtraction war, dinosaur subtraction, and shape net building.

In the afternoon we had a short read to someone block before heading off to our last day of handball.

Today I took the students on a virtual tour of the schools mechanical room. I went into the room yesterday and took pictures and videos of the boilers, water coolers, air vents. Students then enjoyed seeing the inner workings of the school and learning how we heat and cool the building.

Have a great night everyone!

Today in room 5:

The students in room 5 began their day with some listening to reading time on Razkids.

We then moved into our morning calendar and some phonics practice with the blends bl, cl, fl, sh, th, ch, gl, and cl.

After our Netflix Friday during snack we moved into some writing. For writing today we did reflections on our insulation devices from the yesterday! We tested the devices over the morning using ice (Frosty) and boiling water (Karen). Students were aiming to double the time it takes to cool water from boiling to 20*C or an ice cube completely melting. Students were very successful after building their insulators! Today we reflected on what went well and what they would change next time.

Students then went off to gym with Mr Sadowsky to compete in the Beddington Olympics.

When we returned I had some new math stations for enjoy while I worked with small groups of students. The stations were: Subtraction war, domino war, dots and boxes and race to 100.

We finished off our day with a sharing circle before heading home! I updated everyones Razkids today so make sure you catch up on some reading over the weekend.

Have a great weekend!

Today in room 5:

We began our morning with some silent reading time. We broke a record today and read for 23 minutes!

After reading we had a morning meeting and learned a little about St. Patricks Day.

After reviewing the blends (bl, gl, and sl) Mr Wiens joined us for music.

Room 5 enjoyed some time on the playground before heading inside for math.

Today the students continued their work with double digit subtraction with regrouping. This is a tricky unit that takes practice and trying different strategies. The strategies we focus on are:

-Hundreds charts

-Number lines

-Subtracting in columns

-Breaking numbers into tens and ones

-Regrouping using blocks

-Regrouping in traditional form

After lunch we read to a partner before heading to gym to play handball!

When we returned from gym we had ten minutes of recharge time before finishing our Frosty Fridges and Karen Insulators! Students began working on these yesterday and were able to put the finishing touches on this afternoon. Tomorrow we will be testing using hot water and ice cubes! It will be an all afternoon test to help save Karen and Frosty!

After cleaning up, we read another chapter from the BFG. Both the students and I have been really enjoying quietly listening to a story at the end of the day :)

Have a great evening everyone!

Please start bringing in recycle supplies to create a device to keep something warm or cold for a period of time! We will be doing this experiment tomorrow! We decided as a class to build the main box/container using shape nets! So we only need supplies to go inside of the shape net boxes (cardboard, styrofoam, paper) and any other insulators you may want to use!  I will also bring in supplies for students!
