Reading...Give it a Shot

BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program.  Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day.  Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?

When your child reads 30 minutes they will earn one reading card. I have sent home a green folder with the sheet to track your minutes! Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! To earn these new cards students must read for 60 minutes. The reading competition started Monday, January 18th and ends March 26th. Teachers will be tracking totals in order to hopefully win a virtual visit from the Calgary Flames. The more they read… the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school virtually!

Thank you for your support and work with encouraging your child to read!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with a discussion relating our new project we are starting!

Yesterday we watched Frosty the snowman and saw that he melts while Karen (the little girl) gets very cold at the north pole. We decided to come up with a plan to save Frosty and his friend Karen. Today we talked about what we would as a test material for Frosty and Karen and the students came up with hot chocolate for Karen and snow or ice for Frosty!

Next week I will send out an official message for students to start bringing supplies so we can begin building the following Monday/Tuesday. We are looking for materials that will help to insulate our testers and recyclables to build with.

After read to self we had snack, a desk clean, catch up time and outdoor gym. It was chilly today!

In math I gave the students time to do math centers with subtraction and shape games.

We finished our day by cleaning up the room before a sharing circle. Our topic today was bullying and if we had any problems during the week.

Twas a great day and everyone was excited to head out for the weekend!

Have a great weekend everyone :)

Today in room 5;

Today was Pink shirt day!

Below is some info on pink shirt day and bullying

Bullying

The students of room 5 began their day with our morning question:

Have you ever been bullied or picked on?

Students first thought independently, then chatted with a partner, then shared with the whole class.

We spoke about the golden rule:

Treat others how you want to be treated

-This will be posted on our classroom wall alongside our pink shirt day posters

We then transitioned into reading to self before music with Mr Wiens.

After recess on the playground we finished writing our observations from the previous days science lesson.

This whole day lesson had us testing what happens when water is placed in a temperature below zero. Below are some photos from our experiment!

Water going into the fridge and freezer

2 hours later the water has frozen solid!

20 minutes after being out of the freezer

40 minutes out of the freezer

2 hours later! The ice has melted back into a liquid!

In gym today we played lacrosse. I broke the students into teams of four with one goalie. They practiced passing, shooting and some small games. We ended our class with some stretching mindfulness before heading back to class.

After gym we moved into math and practiced an additional strategy for solving subtraction questions.

Today we learned how to use a hundreds chart to subtract double digit questions from 1-100.

We talked about how subtracting 87-63 takes waaaaaay too long to count by 1's. So instead we subtract the 6 tens first! Then we subtract the ones!

Below are the questions we worked on today. Students were given extension questions if they could solve the medium and spicy questions.

We finished our day by creating pink shirt day posters that will be posted in our classroom alongside our golden rule!

Have a relaxing evening everyone :)

Today in room 5:

Today was the 100th day of school!

We started out day by talking about what we learned in the last 100 days.

We used tens and ones blocks to represent 100 during calendar.

Students also tracked their ability to read quietly to self for 100 seconds (we read for 11 minutes as well!)

As a class we listened to the read aloud- The night before the hundredth school by Natasha Wing.

In writing we did a project in which I took a picture of the students with an aging filter. I made everyone look 100 years old! We then wrote about what we would do

As a class we also jumped, squatted, and stayed quiet for 100 seconds!

We counted to 100 by 1, 2, 5, and 10 using exercise as a support.

During math we used our names and a hundreds grid to create name and color patterns. Students wrote their name over and over on a hundreds grid and assigned a color to each letter. As they colored in their pattern on their names they began to see a larger pattern on the hundreds grid. When they are all finished we will be taping them all together to form a large hundreds day quilt!

We finished our day with a sharing circle before sending the students on their way.

-An actual photo of the students seeing themselves as old men and women.

Have a great day everyone!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with a question! We have been doing this all week long as a way to have students share their opinions on a question with their peers and the class. It also helps to get out some of those early morning chit chats :)

We then moved into listening to reading on the ipads using razkids. If you are unable to log into Razkids please email me and I will send you the password.

After our snack we moved into social studies. Today we finished a mini flip book which covered Iqaluit's natural resources, goods and jobs that come from each!

Students then went off to gym with Mr Sadowsky to do some phys. ed stations.

When we returned to class we moved away from subtraction for a day and did some graphing!

Today the students graphed their favourite technology to use at home. The choices were:

-computer/laptops

-Ipad/tablet/phone

-Video games

-Watch TV

Students were given a sticky note and then invited to come and choose their favourite tech.

We then turned the collected data into a bar graph and graphed the information as a class. We talked about our findings with questions such as, "Which technology is the most common favourite of students?"

We finished our day with a sharing circle. Today we talked about how to resolve conflicts such as students intentionally bugging others. As a class we practiced things you can say to help others understand how it makes you feel.

Ready for the weekend!

Have a great evening and weekend everyone!
