Looking for things to do this summer?

City of Calgary - Free Summer Programs

The City of Calgary will be running free summer programs for children 12 and under. Parents can visit the City of Calgary website for more information

I cannot believe we have arrived at the last day of school!

What a year it has been!

Today we had our farewell assembly in which we honoured the students who were awarded the pillars of care. During the assembly we shared some of the things we have been in class to celebrate indigenous week. Room 5 watched some films from Indigenous Cinema in the Classroom.

If you would like to view these films: Indigenous Cinema

We also said farewell to the teachers who will be leaving our school next year! All the best you amazing educators you!

After the assembly we had snack and watched the rest of the BFG movie.

I then gave students some time to share their memory books we worked on all week with their classmates. The last page they got their friends to sign and say their goodbyes!

We then had a fun dance party to stretch our limbs before saying our final goodbyes and cleaning up the classroom.

Today I am sending home the contents of the students desk, their journals and math books, book boxes and a few odds and ends home.

Thank you everyone for coming by after school to do a walking goodbye from the field!

A little thank you from Mr Lancee....

This year was filled with new challenges and different experiences. With covid adding some new rules to our routines it took us some time to get used to everything. We worked together to wear masks, stay separated, and hand sanitize (ALL THE TIME)! This year was filled with laughs and great moments. I will never forget building Frosty fridges, our class murals, and reading hundreds of books! I know next year will bring new challenges and experiences, but the grade twos can handle them smiling the whole way through. So have a wonderful summer everyone! We will see you in the fall for more learning, laughs and fun! It was a pleasure teaching you all and thank you so much for your support this year parents!

Friday June 25 is Hawaiian day! (Hawaiian shirts and skirts for the win!)

We also have our Pillars of Care awards this Friday morning from 8:30-10.

June 25 Is the last day of school!

Today in room 5:

Today we started our morning with a "Soft Start." Each day we start our day in a positive way by having some choice with activities. Clay, colouring, drawing, reading and a snack were the options to help us begin the day with a smile.

We then moved into a morning meeting and watched a class dojo video on how to show respect in the classroom. The students referenced it constantly throughout the day!

After our morning meeting had some time to continue working on our memory books! Today we focused on our friends and what we had learned in school this year.

We then went out to the playground to play some grounders before heading back inside.

During the middle block of the day we continued our work in social on our medicine wheels. Today we finished the last two sections of the medicine wheel and talked about the spirit and mind and what each meant to the students.

After lunch we did another round of clean up before heading outside for gym.

During gym we free played some different games of catch, soccer or kickball.

When we returned inside I gave the students some time to play some different board games. The students enjoyed being able to play with their friends while simultaneously practicing some basic math skills!

After recess outside we worked on our personal expression and graffiti art take home folders. Yesterday I had the students decorate large folders that show who they are! I showed the students how to draw with big bold letters that can often be colourful or 3D!

We cleaned up the classroom and went on our way!

Have a great day everyone :)

Tomorrow I will be sending home all the students art and duotangs in their take home folders.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As part of our ongoing learning, students at Beddington Heights School will have an opportunity to participate in a traditional smudge on June 21. Smudge involves burning a small amount of dried plant such as sage, sweet grass or cedar inside a cast-iron dish or abalone shell. During smudge, participants sit in a circle and listen to the Elder/facilitator offer teachings about the practice and its role in historical and contemporary Indigenous communities. The smudge bowl may be passed around the circle as part of this traditional way of opening or beginning time together. Participation in smudge is informed, voluntary, and always connected to learning. If, for any reason, a student is not participating in the experiential learning, the teacher will ensure that associated learning outcomes are available. The inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and experiences in classrooms is supported and encouraged by The Education Act, Section 16. This experience connects to various outcomes in the Alberta Programs of Study which demonstrates Alberta’s commitment to First Nations, Metis and Inuit Perspectives and experiences in curriculum. We are honoured to offer this learning opportunity to our students. For additional information and questions please contact Mr Lancee at malancee@cbe.ab.ca.

Today in room 5:

I cannot believe we have one week of school left!!

We started our morning with some catch up time to finish our comics and fathers day cards.

With our smudge being on Monday we wrote some positive messages for going into our summer. We also learned about how the tobacco we will be combining with the messages and what the tobacco symbolizes.

After snack and some Netflix Friday we read another chapter of the BFG.

I then gave the students some time to complete mathletics assignments before we cleaned up and went out for gym. Students enjoyed some compound games before heading off to grab their backpacks and head home!

Have a great day everyone!

Friday June 25 is Hawaiian day! (Hawaiian shirts and skirts for the win!)

June 25 Is the last day of school!

Today in room 5!

We started our day with a quick calendar and another chapter of the BFG. We had a special guest speaker, Preston Huppie, who spoke to our entire school digitally about the medicine wheel and the symbolism behind each of it's sections. We learned how the medicine wheel symbolizes the north, east, west south. It also represents the body, mind, spirit and emotions. medicine wheel also symbolizes the four sacred medicines: sweet grass, sage, tobacco, and cedar.

Tomorrow we will be creating a message of closing the year and positively looking towards the summer. This will be given with tobacco on Monday as an offering for our smudge as a whole school. I will be selecting two students to bring the offering to Preston Huppie.

After a clean up and snack we headed to the playground for our recess. Upon returning inside we finished working on our Fathers Day cards! With it being super hero day tomorrow we thought it would be fitting to make cards that show our fathers, mothers, grandpas, grandpas, as superheroes. Thanks for being our heroes loved ones!

After lunch we got right to work building our boats. The students had a task of building a boat using recycled materials that could float and hold up a set amount of weight! The students had a blast building their boats before testing them in a large bin of water. Everything floated,  some held up a large amount of weight and others held up a little or turned into submarines.

Today the grade six students were saying farewell to our school through a digital assembly. We watched as classes gave students awards, said thank yous and read stories.

We cleaned up at the end of the day and went on our way.

Tomorrow is super hero day, so let's have a super Friday!

Looking at elements of non fiction text

-This week we are breaking down books that help us to learn about things in the world!

-We looked at captions, pictures, titles, glossaries, indexes and table of contents.

Writing about how to be an everyday super hero!

Reading to self, and listening to reading.

We will also be writing some positive intention messages which we will be offering for our smudge on Monday.

Math

This week we are revisiting estimation!

We are using our counting skills and understanding of place value to estimate amounts up to 100.

We will also be completing our Friday Mathletics.

Science

This week we are building boats!

For the past few weeks we have been learning about sinking and floating and it is time to put our knowledge to the test. I am hoping to build the boats on Thursday so if you have any extra recycled materials can you please bring them in for Thursday. We will be creating our plans tomorrow and having one day to collect our materials. I will send home a school messenger tomorrow as well!

The boats should be small enough to be able to fit into a normal size desk tray, and big enough to hold some erasers or heavy objects! These boats we design will need to be able to move as well. This can be done with a balloon, propeller or sail. I will provide the materials for sails or balloons.

Art

Fathers/loved ones day cards! We will be making a nice card to say thank you to the beloved heroes of our families. Yes we mean you dads, mom and grandparents!

Health

-Mindfulness

-How can we be a leader or everyday hero (especially in the last two weeks of school!)

Have a great day everyone!

Today in room 5:

Today is dress as your favourite/future career day! After watching part of Zootopia to see different jobs in action we did some brainstorming about what careers we would like in the future. Yesterday we started writing about what we would like to be! This morning we finished off our writing and drawing.

We then moved into snack and a morning meeting before starting some art. For art today we did a guided drawing of the Titanic! After watching a non fiction story about the Titanic yesterday, and beginning to learn about boats and buoyancy the students interest is peeked. Next week we will be building boats so this was a great connection and a fun art project!

After art the students had gym with Mr Sadowsky before coming back inside for a desk clean.

We then used the rest of the morning for some time on Mathletics and some much deserved earned time for 10 minutes.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Today in room 5:

We started our day with some time to read and finish filling in our floating and sinking experiment from the previous day. Yesterday we tested several objects in small jars filled with water to see whether they would float or sink. Some students required a bit more time to finish filling in why some objects start floating, then sink.

After gym outside with Mr Sadowsky and snack we moved into math. Today we practiced using rulers to draw different shapes and 3D objects in our math books. We worked together to describe which shapes and objects were which by their sides, faces and edges. Students were telling me it was hard to draw some of the objects from the previous days science experiments so I thought it would helpful to practice them again!

We had some time today to continue reading the BFG before heading off to lunch.

In the afternoon I gave the students a chunk of time to read their just right books on Razkids. They answered reading comprehension questions and came to ask me for support with understanding a new word.

As you know, Friday is career day and we will be dressing up as our future occupations. To help students with thinking about what they would like to be we watched a the first half of Zootopia! We paused the movie and discussed different jobs we noticed the animals doing. Tomorrow we will be doing some writing about what career the students would like to be when they grow up!

We finished our day by cleaning up the room before heading home!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Room 5 then enjoyed some time watching a show while they ate their healthy snacks.

We then had some time on ipads to complete some mathletics and razkids activities. I wanted to give students the option today as we had a double math day to make up for the missed math the day before. Yesterday we attended an online session that helped the students to learn about their stress and ways to manage stress.

Friday June 25 is Hawaiian day! (Hawaiian shirts and skirts for the win!)

June 25 Is the last day of school!

With the weather being so warm please pack a water bottle, hat, and sunscreen if possible.

Today in room 5:

We began our day with some time to read to self using our book boxes, library books and levelled books.

During our morning meeting we watched a video to help us understand empathy. The video came from class dojo. The story tells us about Mojo, who is a little monster that gets very angry during his play he is putting on. He upsets another monster and has difficulty understanding what he did wrong. The students helped mojo to recognize his feelings, the other monsters feeling and better understand how he could have helped the situation.

After our health lesson we moved into writing. During this writing block we worked on the problem of our critter comics. The problem had to connect to the fact that animal was two different creatures. For example, Mr Lancee's Duck Giraffe wants to fit in with the ducks but he is too tall swim in the pond and too heavy to fly. Up next we will writing about two events that lead to the problem getting solved.

When we finished snack and recess we moved into math. Today we practiced our graphing and problems related to the data skills. Students graphed the number of pets students owned and different animals found in the zoo. They then had to answer questions such as, "Which animal did the students own most?" "How many more hippos than bears were in the zoo?".

After lunch we were able to read to a partner using our favourite books!

For gym we were outside playing different tag, and soccer games. It was blistering hot outside today!

After gym we enjoyed some mindfulness colouring before comparing homes of the first settlers on the prairie. We compared them to our own homes and homes found in Iqaluit.

When we finished recess we had some time to catch up on some of the work from the day. Students worked on their problems for their comics, their graphing from the morning, desk cleaning and enjoyed some relaxing lego if everything was finished.

Have a great evening everyone :)
