Wednesday Sept 30, 2020

Happy Wednesday Sept 30, 2020!

Apologies for lack of blogs on Monday and Tuesday. I was away due to illness. I am happy and healthy and back to work now so I will make sure their are blogs today, tomorrow and Friday.

Reminders:

Today was orange shirt day. On this day we remember the indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools. As a class we wore orange shirts, made "every child matters" bracelets, and watched three videos from the orange shirt day website. For more information please visit https://www.orangeshirtday.org/.

Tomorrow is Terry Fox day here at Beddington! We will be doing the Terry Fox run within our phys ed classes. We do the Terry Fox run as a way to remember Terry Fox and his marathon journey to raise money and awareness for cancer and cancer related illnesses. Please send a water bottle and proper outdoor shoes for the run tomorrow!

Each year in school we celebrate the academic achievements of students through the pillars of care. The pillars of care are: Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Place, Care for Learning and our pillar of the month Care for Wellness. The winners of these awards will be announced tomorrow! Awards will be handed out Friday to be worn all day :)

This week in room 5:

Language Arts:

Students have been focusing on the letters D and F this week! We practice making the sounds, find words with F and D, practice printing, and watch videos on the letters. Grade two's extend their learning by writing a sentence around a word that starts with F such as, Mr Lancee has smelly feet! (Their idea, completely untrue of course!) I will provide some F and D printing practice sheets at the end of the blog for students to use at home!

We have also been and will be doing our Star Student writing. Students ask 5 questions to the star student together we transform the answers into sentences. Grade 1's do one sentence but can do two. Grade 2's do three sentences but can make up an additional sentence.

We will also begin a journal entry this week all about the seasons! We will be using our senses to explore fall. What do we see, hear, smell, taste and touch that helps us know it is fall? This sheet can be found at the bottom of the blog!

Students also read daily, I encourage this to be done at home as well! Just 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference in a child's reading ability! We look for words that have F and D as we read and read books as a class. Students make predictions about what might happen and reflect on the book after we finish!

Math:

We have been working hard this week to develop our knowledge of patterns. Students are gaining confidence in making different kinds of patterns using blocks, color, shapes and letters. Today we introduced what is, "Not a pattern!" Working independently students had to pick the incorrect pattern from from three patterns and correct it. We then worked in our blue math books to show how we know the difference between a pattern and not a pattern. We will continue practicing these in our morning calendar as well!

We also worked on the number four and will be working on the number five. How many is 5? How can we represent or show that we know what five actually means? Grade two's work to show numbers between 1-100 that have a five within them, such as 45. If you were not here today, try showing 5 in different ways at home! Number, fingers, tallies, blocks, pictures are just a few ways to do this!

.

Grade twos: Try to represent the number 35 in at least 4 ways!

Social:

This week we continued to learn all about me, specifically, My Family! Students are almost finished doing a kid survey to describe how many people are in their family, fun things they like do, and their favourite holiday to spend with their family. We will finish it this week! For anyone away, there is a copy found at the bottom of the blog.

Science:

We have been focusing on what small crawling flying creatures in science. Rather then me telling the students what we are going to learn about, we did a class vote! The students voted on learning about bees as our first creature! We then talked as a class and the students told me what they thought was important to know about these insects. Their inquiry skill drove questions such as:

-What do bees look like? (Appearance)

-What do bees eat? (Diet)

-Where do bees live? (Habitat)

-What helps bees survive?(stingers, stripes, wings) (special adaptations)

-Are their different kinds of bees? (Species)

-How do they help humans? (Impact)

These questions will drive our research as we learn about this insect! A sheet on the bee appearance has been added to the bottom of the blog.

What do bees look like?

Phys Ed:

We are finishing up our last week of compound games!

Health:

This week is all about the Pillars of Care!

Hope everyone has a beeutiful Wednesday evening!

Mr Lancee
