Reading...Give it a Shot
BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program. Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day. Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?
When your child reads 30 minutes they will earn one reading card. I have sent home a green folder with the sheet to track your minutes! Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! The reading competition started Monday, January 18th and ends March 26th. Teachers will be tracking totals in order to hopefully win a virtual visit from the Calgary Flames. The more they read… the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school virtually!
Thank you for your support and work with encouraging your child to read!
Go Flames Go!
Today in room 5:
We began our morning to catch up on some printing, or read to add to our reading give it a shot minutes! Room 5 had an early snack before being joined by Mr Wiens for music.
Today we began our monster story writing. Using sentence starters such as, "My monster _____" and the brainstormed senses from the previous day students began to write about their monsters. It is great to see how much the students are interested in writing about their monster! This will be our writing task into next week before we create good copies. We created our monster pictures yesterday using oil pastels and they will be displayed with their writing once finished!
After recess on the playground we moved into some math. Today students were working on 2 by 1 digit and 2 by 2 digit addition with regrouping. Using place value blocks and ones and tens houses to help students with place value we are making progress each day! Practice makes perfect!
In the afternoon I introduced the students to our third literacy station! On Monday we had word work, Tuesday was read to self and today we had working on writing. I gave the students the time to continue working on their monster writing.
After gym playing badminton using mats as nets we moved into science. For science today we explored the classroom and looked for magnetic and non magnetic objects. Students loved using the magnets to test different objects and draw pictures of what they tested.
We finished up our day by doing a desk clean and watching some magnet experiments before cleaning up.
Hope everyone has a wonderful evening!
Good luck reading :)
