Please start bringing in recycle supplies to create a device to keep something warm or cold for a period of time! We will be doing this experiment hopefully next week if we finish all the preparation. We decided as a class to build the main box/container using shape nets! So we only need supplies to go inside of the shape net boxes. (cardboard, styrofoam, paper and any other insulators you may want to use! 

Tomorrow the students will be picking their materials. I will send home what they choose so they can bring something in :) If need be I will have some stuff they can use as well!

Reading...Give it a Shot 

BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program.  Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day.  Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?  

When your child reads 30 minutes they will earn one reading card. I have sent home a green folder with the sheet to track your minutes! Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! To earn these new cards students must read for 60 minutes. The reading competition started Monday, January 18th and ends March 26th. Teachers will be tracking totals in order to hopefully win a virtual visit from the Calgary Flames. The more they read… the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school virtually!

This week in room 5:


Language Arts:


-Phonics work focusing on ch and sh sounds.


-Learning how to stretch a sentence (Who, what, where, when, why?)


-Starting story writing

    - looking at story books

    -Reading stories as a class

    -Looking at beginning middle and ends

    -What is the problem? How does it get solved?

Next week we will break these down further


-Read to self & read to someone.


Math


Subtraction using manipulatives learning how to borrow from the tens! (subtraction with regrouping)


-Subtraction poem:

    More on top, no need to stop. More on the floor, go next door, borrow ten more.


-Practice practice practice!


-Mathletics on Thursday



Social (had to push some things from last week to this one!)

-Daily life in Iqaluit (transportation and school life)


Science

    - Creating our assessment tool for our devices to keep something hot or cool

    -Picking materials for our devices

    -Planning out devices.
