Happy Thursday Mar 11, 2021
Reminders:
No school Friday Mar 12
Spring Break Mar 27-April 6
Pillar of Care Assembly Mar 26
Please start bringing in recycle supplies to create a device to keep something warm or cold for a period of time! We will be doing this experiment next week! We decided as a class to build the main box/container using shape nets! So we only need supplies to go inside of the shape net boxes (cardboard, styrofoam, paper) and any other insulators you may want to use!
Reading...Give it a Shot
BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program. Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day. Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?
When your child reads 30 minutes they will earn one reading card. I have sent home a green folder with the sheet to track your minutes! Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! To earn these new cards students must read for 60 minutes. The reading competition started Monday, January 18th and ends March 26th. Teachers will be tracking totals in order to hopefully win a virtual visit from the Calgary Flames. The more they read… the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school virtually!
Thank you for your support and work with encouraging your child to read!
Go Flames Go!
Today in room 5:
The students of room 5 began their day with some read to self and catch up time finishing their beginning, middle, and end pictures from the Ninja Bread Man.
We then had a morning meeting and discussed the digraphs sh and ch. As a class we brainstormed words that have these digraphs.
After music with Mr Weins we had a quick snack, listened to a fairy tale and discussed the problem and solution to the problem in the story. We finished off our time before recess by doing some whole class phonics using a site called : Really great reading
This site is wonderful for using different blends and sliding in new letters to practice sounding out words. Give it a try at home!
After recess on the playground we some time doing mathletics before lunch. I assigned four assignments today which you can finish at home as well!
When we finished lunch we had some time to work with partners doing read to someone. In gym we worked on our throwing skills with a fun game of jumping jack dodgeball.
After gym and some recharge time we read the story: The Three Little Pigs. Most of the students knew the story, but every version is a little bit different. After finishing the story we brainstormed the problem in the story and how the problem gets solved. Students then recreated this on their own through drawing and labels.
We finished off our day by reading the first chapter of The BFG by Roald Dahl before having a sharing circle.
Hope everyone has a great long weekend!
Mr Lancee
