Happy Wednesday January 13, 2021!
Reminders:
-Masks must be worn at school, follow arrows around the building, only two students in the bathroom at a time, hand sanitize whenever leaving and entering the school and classroom.
We began our day with some time to catch up on some letter W printing and sentences. Students who were finished had the choice of reading to self or free writing in their journals.
Students then headed off to gym with Mr Sadowsky to do some fitness and yoga!
When we returned to class we had snack and continued our novel reading of Charlotte's Web (Chapter 14).
We then had some time to go through our morning meeting. One new addition to our morning meeting featured a new number of the day sheet. This sheet has the students still representing a number of the day in multiple ways, but now we can use ones and tens blocks too! This sheet also features a section in which kids can show their math skills and make the number of the day using addition or subtraction. It can be found below!
After recess in the field playing a group game we moved into some math!
Today I had the students working on some premade addition question that were split up to suit the of the students! We practiced 1 by 1, 2 by 1, and even 2 by 2 addition without grouping. It was great to see the students using manipulatives such as tens and ones blocks along side personal strategies such as, number lines and hundreds charts to add the numbers. We will keep at it and keep practicing for the rest of the week!
In the afternoon we returned our books from our book boxes and chose new ones. Ms Paolini kindly brought us new books from the library to read as well!
We then moved into science and had a solid block of time to create our magnet safety posters! Before I bring magnets into the classroom I want to ensure that students understood where it is unsafe to place the magnets! I will give everyone a chunk of time tomorrow to finish up the posters before I mark them.
After recess we finished up our day by viewing our next community in Social. We are starting to learn about the Arctic community...Iqaluit! We used google maps (Click to try it!) to see how long it would take us to travel to Iqaluit (10 hours by plane!). We also used our maps of Canada to color in the arctic region and find place Iqaluit on the map. For the last few minutes of the lesson we dropped the googlemaps person on the map to take a short walk around the community!
Tomorrow we will be looking into the weather and what we need to bring when we fly on AirClassroom to Iqaluit next week!
Have a wonderful evening everyone!
Stay safe and warm :)
